Galway City Centre’s historic medieval core is to be transformed after Councillors unanimously approved a planning application for the Cross Street Rejuvenation Project. This ambitious multi-million euro project represents a rare opportunity to comprehensively upgrade one of the most vibrant parts of Galway City Centre, while preserving the distinctive character of the area.
Road works are to take place at the Bóthar Stiofáin/Gateway Shopping Park junction (the junction at Lidl), beginning from Monday September 7. These works will last for one week.
A drop-in public information event for this project will be held on at St. James’ GAA Clubhouse, Michael Collins Road (H91 H983) on August 13, 2026 between 3:00pm and 7:00pm.
In accordance with Part XI of the Planning & Development Acts 2000 (as amended) and Part 8 , Article 81 of the Planning Development Regulations 2001-2026 notice is hereby given by Galway City Council of the proposal to provide a segregated high quality cycle route along the R339 Monivea Road Galway; entitled “Monivea Road (East) Active Travel Scheme”.
It is proposed the works undertaken will include measures to improve pedestrian safety and convenience through the provision of bus stops, crossing points, and line marking.
Galway City Council welcomes the reactivation of the Galway Metropolitan Area Transportation Strategy (GMATS) by the National Transport Authority (NTA). This important Strategy will identify the transport needs for Galway and inform the future development of Galway, enabling it to continue to serve as the economic and cultural centre of the West of Ireland.
Road resurfacing works are nearing completion on the Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road Active Travel Scheme. The final phase involves the resurfacing of sections of the Monivea Road to the east and west of the Ballybane Road Junction. This will continue until Thursday May 21.
Road Closures will be in place from 9.30am – 4.00pm, Monday to Friday from Monday April 27 for approximately three weeks. The closures will be in place on the Ballybane Road from St. James Road to the Monivea Road junction, followed by potential short closures on Monivea Road East and West at the junction of Ballybane Road.
A commemorative plaque has been unveiled to honour a Galway soldier fatally wounded while serving on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon over 45 years ago.
