Galway City Council is delighted to have won the ‘Best Community Transport Initiative’ Award at the 2026 LAMA All-Ireland Community and Council Awards in recognition for a first-of-its-kind active travel project in the heart of the city.

The National Transport Authority has today published the findings of its latest survey of walking, wheeling and cycling in the Galway Metropolitan Area, which reveals that every day, up to 23,000 return walking and cycling non-leisure trips are made by residents who could have used a car.

Members of the Galway City Council executive and Elected Members from the city’s East Ward have held positive discussions on the Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road Cycle Network Scheme, as the project enters its final stages. 

From Wednesday 18 February at 7:00 a.m. until Friday 20 February at. 5:00 pm, St. James’ Road will be closed between Ballybane Road to the Bayview Rise Junction. 

Galway City Council has published the results of a recent public consultation exercise on the proposal for a bus gate to be constructed at Bun a Chnoic and Cnoc an Óir.

Essential night-time roadworks are to be conducted on the Cathedral side of Salmon Weir Bridge, beginning on Friday January 23.
