Scheme Overview

The Salmon Weir Bridge Pedestrian Crossing Project entails the construction of a temporary pedestrian crossing across the R863 University Road at Galway Cathedral. This will be a toucan crossing (i.e. signal controlled crossing for use by walkers, wheelers and cyclists).  It will connect the footway on University Road near Fisheries Field to Droichead an Dóchais and will improve safety for all road users.

Brian Conneely and Co. Ltd., working on behalf of Galway City Council, is continuing to progress construction works on this project.  As part of this, they will be undertaking essential roadworks from 8 December until 12 December 2025.

Working hours

Most of the work will take place at night (18:00-06.00 Monday to Friday) and will require one lane of the road at Salmon Weir Bridge to be closed. The works are being undertaken overnight to minimise disruption.

Traffic Management

Temporary traffic management systems will be in place for the duration of the works. Lane closures will be required during these times. Signage will be erected to advise motorists of the works.

Footways along Salmon Weir Bridge and University Road will be closed as per the current Traffic Management Plan. Signage will be erected on both sides of Salmon Weir Bridge, as necessary, to advise users of alternative, safe routes.

Droichead an Dóchais will not be impacted by these works and will be open at all times.

Regular updates on this project will be posted on this webpage. Updates will also be posted on Galway City Council’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
