Local Property Tax (LPT)

Local Property Tax (LPT) is an annual tax charged on all residential properties in the State and came into effect in 2013. Full details on LPT obligations can be accessed at the Revenue website. The revenue generated by Local Property Tax is invested into the entire range of local Council services including housing services, road maintenance, public lighting, fire services, libraries, recreation and amenity facilities, arts and cultural supports, litter management and street cleaning, supporting community initiatives and economic development.

Local Economic and Community Plan

Galway City Council has the primary responsibility for leading economic, social and community development in the city. The LECP was developed to reflect this responsibility under Section 66 of the Local Government Act 2001 as amended by section 44 of the Local Government Reform Act 2014. The LECP Framework 2024 – 2029 details 5 High-Level Goals and 17 Sustainable Community and Economic Objectives.

Notice of the Passing of Resolution Under Section 20(2) of the Finance (Local Property Tax) Act 2012 (As Amended)

16 October 2024

In pursuance of the provisions of section 20 of the FINANCE (LOCAL PROPERTY TAX) ACT 2012 (as amended), I the undersigned, hereby notify the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage of the passing, of a resolution at a meeting of the above mentioned local authority on 14th October 2024 to the effect that the basic rate of local property tax should stand varied upwards by 15 per cent for the years 2025 to 2029 in respect of relevant residential properties situated in the local authority’s administrative area.
