Galway City Council Chief Executive, Leonard Cleary, and staff from Planning, Recreation and Amenity, Economic Development, Tourism, and the Night Time Economy Officer met with a delegation from Galway’s Westend business association in City Hall this week. The discussion explored opportunities for the west of Galway City Centre, and covered areas including potential improvements at Father Burke Park, the current summer pedestrianisation, public realm improvements to key areas including the Small Crane and Ravens Terrace, accessibility issues, and branding and marketing of the area.
Galway City Council will soon commence a new framework plan for the west area of the city centre, with funding from the Town Centre First Heritage Revival (THRIVE) scheme. Galway City Council will address the area as an urban village community and apply the Town Centre First Framework to create a plan that explores opportunities for strengthening this vibrant, thriving area - building upon, and supporting, its built and social heritage and distinct character. This will be a multi-faceted plan built on collaboration with the voluntary and creative communities, businesses, and residents in the area. Taking a co-design approach, Galway City Council will seek to develop proposals and identify priorities for this area.
Galway City Council welcomed engagement with the group, and with Galway’s Westend new chairperson David Fitzpatrick (Bótown Burger) to collaborate on the projects discussed, and to work together to deliver results for this vibrant, bohemian and charming part of the city, renowned for its hidden gems and unique atmosphere.
