  • Project will deliver faster, more reliable journey times for workers in Parkmore

  • Significant enhancement of pedestrian facilities also included as part of the completed works.

Galway City Council is pleased to provide an early Christmas present to workers and residents in Parkmore with confirmation that works on the Parkmore Bus Priority Project have been completed ahead of schedule.  It had been expected that construction works would continue into the first months of 2025, but works are now substantially complete in advance of the Christmas period.

Construction on the Parkmore Road Bus Priority Project began in February 2024.  The project includes:

  • A new southbound bus lane, apx. 600m in length, along Parkmore Road from the Business Park roundabout to the Monivea Road junction.

  • Six new bus stops along the road, and four new signalised pedestrian crossings.

  • New high-quality footpaths have also been constructed along both sides of the road and junctions have been tightened, reducing car speeds.

  • Upgrade works were also completed at the Monivea Road Signalised Junction.

The Parkmore Bus Priority Project has been led by the Active Travel Department of Galway City Council and funded by the National Transport Authority.  It was originally scheduled to be completed in Q1 2025 but works by contractors Jons Civil Engineering have progressed well and are now substantially complete ahead of schedule.

This project will allow for faster and more reliable bus journeys and has delivered new pedestrian and public transport infrastructure which will benefit bus users.  By providing this enhanced infrastructure, the aim of the scheme is to encourage a modal shift away from the private car, and to increase the number of people opting to travel by public transport.

Derek Pender, Director of Service for the Project Development Directorate of Galway City Council says: “Parkmore is a vital employment hub for Galway City and the wider region, and it is important that this area is served by a robust and reliable public transport system.  The bus routes serving Parkmore are the busiest in the city, and the new bus services will provide faster journey times for thousands of bus users each day, and hopefully for many more who now opt to travel by bus because of the improved service that this will facilitate.

“Galway City Council is committed to delivering more active travel and sustainable transport infrastructure in Parkmore and elsewhere in the City, as we encourage as many people as possible to walk, wheel, cycle or travel by public transport rather than by car.  I want to thank the businesses of Parkmore, and also the residents in the area, for their support throughout the development of this project.”

Shane Cannon from Medtronic and the Parkmore Traffic Action Group, which represents companies located in Parkmore, has welcomed the development. “This new bus lane is an important project for the businesses in Parkmore, and for the current and future workforce here.  Any project which improves accessibility to Parkmore is only good for the area as it will help us to attract and retain talent in a competitive market.  I want to thank Galway City Council and the NTA for supporting this project and look forward to the further expansion of bus services in Parkmore in the near future.”

The project has been supported by the Parkmore Traffic Action Group, the IDA and Galway County Council. Construction works were undertaken by Jons Civil Engineering, on behalf of Galway City Council, and consultants DBFL were appointed to deliver this project.
