Registration/update of details

Applications to register or change name or address details may be submitted online on www.checktheregister.ie or by downloading an application form and returning by post. Your PPSN and Date of Birth will be required for any request for action using Check the Register 

Applications to update your nationality details must be submitted by post.

Postal Voters Lists

If you are unable to go in person to a Polling Station to vote on the day of an Election or Referendum, you may be entitled to apply for a Postal Vote.  The types of electors who can register for a Postal Vote are:

Members of the Defence Forces – form available on request
Irish Diplomats working abroad (and their partner/spouse with Irish citizenship) - form available on request
Members of An Garda Síochána - form available on request
Persons detained in Prison – form available on request
Persons unable to go to a polling station due to illness or disability PVS Illness or Disability From 
Persons who are working on the day of an election/referendum and cannot attend their local polling station, e.g. full-time students studying away from home, polling staff, or persons working away from home, etc PV4 Student or Work purposes Form 
A person whose safety may be at risk if their details are published (this also applies to people living with such persons). Such persons can apply to become anonymous electors PV7 Anonymous Elector Form 
Applications for postal votes may require documentary evidence to be submitted in support of eligibility (please see application form for details).  An elector registered as a postal voter may vote by post only and may not vote at a polling station.

Please note that eligibility for a postal vote does not apply to persons who are out of the Country on holiday at the time of an Election or Referendum.

 

If you are registered to vote, you will receive a polling card in advance of an Election or Referendum. The polling card will show what polling station you vote in, and which polling box you put your vote into.

You must vote in person, at the polling station allotted to you - unless you are registered as a Special or Postal Voter (e.g. Garda Siochana, Foreign Diplomats, persons with a physical illness or disability, person with an occupation, service or employment preventing them to get to attend at their polling station; prisoners; residents of hospitals, homes or similar institutions.

Bring your polling card and a valid ID with you to your polling station.

If you do not have your polling information card, you can still vote. You should bring a valid form of personal identification to the polling station. You can only vote in your designated polling station.

A local electoral area (LEA) is an electoral area for elections to local authorities in Ireland. There are three Local Electoral Areas or LEAs in Galway City. They are East, Central and West. Each area has 6 Members elected to Galway City Council. Candidates seeking election will campaign in their Local Electoral Area for votes. You can only vote for a candidate who is seeking election in your Local Electoral Area.

Every person who is a citizen of Ireland or ordinarily resident in the State and has reached the age of 18 years and is not subject to disqualification is eligible for election or co-option to and membership of a local authority.
