Arts and Culture Services

The City Arts Service is managed by Galway City Arts Office. The Galway City Arts Office consists of the Arts Officer, the Arts Development Officer and the Arts Office Administrators. The Galway City Arts Office works in partnership with the various sections and departments within the council from Tourism, Community and the Galway Culture Company to develop and strengthen arts opportunities in communities, neighbourhoods and districts across the city.

Arts Office

The Arts Office manages and coordinates the investment of public money in the arts on behalf of Galway City Council, funding a wide range of activities across the city – theatre, visual art, readings, dance, music, film, street arts, circus, spectacle and more.

Creative Ireland

The Creative Ireland programme is a culture based programme designed to promote individual, community and national wellbeing.

Galway City Museum

Galway City Museum is located beside the Spanish Arch on the banks of the river Corrib in Galway City.

Galway City Museum was founded in the mid-1970s and was originally located in Comerford House beside the Spanish Arch.

In April 2007 a new purpose built museum building was opened, behind the site of the old museum at Comerford House. The new Galway City Museum project was the initiative of Galway City Council to advance the cultural and heritage life of Galway City.

Galway City Museum collects, preserves and displays materials relating to the history of Galway City; Archaeology, Art, Geology, Natural History, Social, Political and Industrial History and Folk-life.

Public Art

Award-winning artist Alan Clarke has been commissioned to develop a spectacular new sculpture for Galway City.

Theatres & Performance Venues

There are two performance venues, managed and run under the umbrella of Galway City Council in Galway City - The Town Hall Theatre located in Courthouse Square in Woodquay and The Black Box Theatre located nearby on Dyke Road.
