Scheme Overview
Galway City Council plans to proceed with planning permission under a Part 8 application for a proposed Active Travel Scheme approximately 1.7km long on the R339 Monivea Road from the Old Ballybrit Road junction (East) to the R865 Ballybane Road junction. This will provide a safe and attractive active travel route, catering for all walkers, wheelers and cyclists, including vulnerable road users.
We intend to lodge a planning application for this project in the coming months. When this application is made, Galway City Council will invite submissions and observations from members of the public as part of a statutory period of public consultation. Further updates on this will be available on this webpage, and in local press.
The main aims of this project are:
- Route Development: To provide high-quality cycling facilities along the route identified that will make a significant contribution to meeting Galway City Council and the National Transport Authority’s objectives to encourage the continued modal shift from car use to active travel modes.
- Public Transport: To provide for improvements to bus stop infrastructure for the existing bus services on all routes.
- Interconnectivity with other schemes: To allow for future tie-ins with other existing and proposed active travel schemes in the area, including Ballybane Road, Castlepark Road and onwards to the future BusConnects: Dublin Road scheme.
The works will include:
- A new 3m wide two-way cycle track along the northern side of the road, reducing in places where constraints exist.
- New and upgraded 2m footpaths on both sides of the road.
- The provision of a typically 6.4m road carriageway for general vehicular traffic. with generally 3m two-way cycle track, along with 2m footpaths on both sides of the R339 Monivea Road, reducing in places where constraints exist.
- Reduction in road carriageway widths for general vehicluar traffic to 6.4m.
- Junction tightening and the introduction of raised pedestrian crossings with continued footway surface on all side roads to prioritise the movements of walkers and wheelers.
- Continuous cycle track crossings on all side road junctions to prioritise cyclists' movements.
- The provision of pedestrian and cyclist crossings at signalised junctions.
- The provision of pedestrian crossings throughout the scheme.
