How do I nominate myself for election to Galway City Council?

    At an election a person may nominate himself or herself as a candidate or may, with his or her consent, be nominated by another person (being a person registered as an elector in the area of the local authority for which the person proposes to nominate the candidate) as proposer. 

    Each candidate shall be nominated by a separate nomination paper in the form directed by the Minister. Each nomination paper shall state the names (the surname being stated first) and the address and occupation (if any) of the candidate.

    A candidate may include in the nomination paper the name of the political party of which he or she is a candidate and provide a certificate of political affiliation to authenticate this.

    Independent candidates shall be entitled to enter 'Non Party'.

    Independent candidates must have the assent of 15 persons (excluding the candidate and any proposer) who are electors in the local electoral area, and complete a Form of Statutory declaration or shall make a deposit of €100.

  • How do I book a nomination appointment?

    Nominations open at 10:00am on Saturday 11 May 2024 and close at 12 noon on Saturday 18 May, 2024.

  • Nominations will be received in advance by appointment with the Returning Officer, Mr Gary McMahon within the dates specified above.
  • Appointments will take place in City Hall.

  • Nominees can get a nomination paper online below or from Customer Services, Galway City Council, City Hall, College Road, during normal working hours - Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 4.00pm. Ph: 091 536400 or email: returningofficer@galwaycity.ie

     

    Nominees should familiarise themselves with the requirements of the process before their appointment, including what to bring to the appointment. Please take note of the requirements regarding photos

    After the deadline for withdrawal of nominations, if there are more candidates than there are seats i.e. 6 per Local Electoral Area, a poll will be taken on the 7th June, 2024.

    Spending and donation limits for the 2024 elections

    Since the last local elections in 2019 the spending limits that apply at local elections have been revised in line with changes in the consumer price index. There have been no further legislative changes to the rules on election spending and donations that apply at local elections. The current donation limits are set out in theLocal Elections (Disclosure of Donations and Expenditure) Act 1999 (as amended).

    The spending period and submission of statements after the election

     

    Section 12B of the Act specifies that the spending period be set by an order made by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage and must commence between 50 and 60 days before polling day, and end on polling day. Election spending incurred during this period must be disclosed by candidates and is subject to the limits specified in paragraph 5, above. The Local Elections (Disclosure of Donations and Expenditure) Act 1999 (Period for Reckoning Election Expenses) Order 2024 (S.I. No. 135 of 2024) provided for the commencement of the spending period on 8 April 2024; it will end on polling day on 7 June 2024.

     

    Section 13 of the Act requires that a written statement of all election expenses (whether paid or not) incurred in relation to a local election must be furnished in person by a candidate to their local authority within 90 days after polling day at that election. With the election being held on 7 June 2024, the written statement must be submitted on or before 5 September 2024.
