Galway Bay is of huge importance being designated as a Special Area of Conservation. It is also significant as a Special Protection Area for wild birds. Protection of bathing water quality is also important with Salthill beach designated as a blue flag beach.
Salthill is subject to flood risk caused by intense rainfall, storms and rising sea levels. These extreme weather conditions have been exacerbated in more recent years due to climate change. The Framework Plan will consider the impacts of climate change and opportunities to make Salthill resilient to the impact.
