Through a year long public consultation and engagement process we aim to address key issues including improvements to public spaces and facilities, greater accessibility and supporting sustainability and climate action. The plan seeks to enhance Salthill's unique identity and character. It aims to establish a vision that supports resilience and prosperity, that identifies opportunities to address the challenges of climate change and environmental sensitivities. By placing local residents and businesses at the heart of the process, the framework intends to create a sustainable and inclusive future for Salthill. The study area includes the Village, Leisureland, adjacent parks and the seafront from Grattan Beach to Blackrock Diving Tower What will the Framework Plan achieve? Salthill village has a distinctive character and vibrancy. It is a commercial centre, a visitor destination and has a variety of recreational and amenity uses. It retains many of the traditional seaside resort characteristics and uses such as entertainment facilities, cafés, restaurants and a range of tourist accommodation and attractions. In recognition of the importance that Salthill village and seafront plays in the life of the city and the importance of the coastal environment, the Galway City Development Plan 2023-2029 sets out policy to prepare a strategy for the long-term development and enhancement of the character of Salthill village and promenade. The Salthill Village and Seafront Framework Plan will be a long-term plan which will: Establish a shared vision for Salthill Village and Seafront Guide the enhancement, management, use and development of Salthill and the seafront Enable an integrated approach to the future development and management of Salthill and the seafront The project will run throughout 2025 and will involve the local community to help identify priorities for Salthill. Galway City Council together with architects and urban designers Allies and Morrison, will consider a range of topics including: Local people Local businesses The natural environment The seafront, beach and leisure facilities Health and wellbeing Local character, identity and design Village uses, public spaces, streets and the promenade Tourism Sustainability Climate change Movement and travel When can I get involved? The first stage of participatory engagement events will begin in February, with further opportunities to get involved throughout 2025. The final result of this work will be a framework plan which will help shape the future of Salthill.
