Overview
Galway City Council’s Active Travel Department is supporting the National Transport Authority (NTA) in their provision of a redesigned bus network for the Galway Metropolitan Area.
Key benefits of the new bus network for Galway include an approximately 50% increase in the number of bus services in the greater Galway area, including more bus routes, more frequent services, and an enhanced weekend schedule. Further details on the planned new bus network are available by clicking on this link.
To facilitate this redesigned bus network, improvement works will be carried out at locations throughout the city. Some of these require planning approval, and these are subject of a planning application by Galway City Council under Section 38 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994. The Section 38 application covers works which are to facilitate new and improved bus stops at 14 locations throughout Galway City. A map showing these locations is available here and details of these proposed works are available at this link.
It should be noted that the works which will be contained within the Section 38 process do not represent the totality of the improvements required for the Galway City Bus Network Redesign. Further works, which do not require planning consent, will also be carried out, including to install new bus stops at various locations. Galway City Council is also continuing the process of enhancing existing bus stops throughout the city to help make public transport more accessible and attractive.
You are invited to make a submission on these planned Section 38 works before the deadline of Tuesday 4 August. Representations may be made in writing to the Active Travel Team, Galway City Council, City Hall, College Road, Galway, H91 X4K8, by email to ActiveTravel@GalwayCity.ie or electronically via https://consult.galwaycity.ie/.
