The Local Authority Biodiversity Action Plan (LABAP) is designed to provide a structured approach to biodiversity conservation at the local authority level. It outlines the objectives, strategies, and actions needed to protect and enhance biodiversity within respective local authority areas.

By participating in the pre-draft consultation phase, you can help identify local issues and needs and you’ll help to create and develop actions to protect and enhance biodiversity in Galway City.

The previous action plan, the Galway City Biodiversity Action Plan 2014 – 2024, had three objectives:

  • To raise awareness and appreciation of biodiversity
  • To maintain and enhance biodiversity within the city
  • To increase our knowledge and understanding of biodiversity

It enacted several actions over the course of the ten years to meet these objectives, including appointing the role of Biodiversity Officer, establishing a biodiversity forum, developing a biodiversity awareness, education and training programme and much more. Recent initiatives include Grattan Beach Sand Dune Conservation Pilot, Buaile Bó Ballyloughane conservation grazing project, The Hares Corner, The Wild Bee Festival, Rain Garden Planter pilot scheme, Invasive Species Strategy and Biodiversity Youth Workshops to name a few.

The revision of the current plan for the next five years 2025 to 2030 is to correspond to changes in our ecosystems, European and national legislation, policy and future Directives.
