The City Council may issue parking permits to facilitate people who are 'Residents' of Pay and Display Areas. Eligible residents may apply for the following types of parking permit: Resident's Permit Visitor's Permit Carer's Permit

I am a resident of Galway City; can I obtain a permit to park on the street in the area I reside in?

Resident's Permit

What is the purpose and the application process for a Residents Parking Permit?

Residents of a Pay and Display area may apply for a Residents Parking Permit, which permits them to park in the designated pay and display area by displaying a residents parking permit on their vehicle.

The purpose of a residents permit is to provide on street parking for households at the associated residential address.

A 'Resident' may be:

Owner of a Property

Renting a Property

Living at a property which they neither own nor rent

Application Process:

Download and complete an application form for a resident's parking permit.

The Application Form must be completed in full along with the following documents:

Proof of Residency e.g. a current utility bill in your name at the address given on the application (Utility Bills such as Electricity, Bord Gais, eircom, UPC/SKY. Bank, Credit Card, Credit Union Statements) issued in the last 3 months. Note the non-domestic bills and mobile phone bills are not accepted as proof of residency. 

Copy of Certificate of Ownership (logbook) at permit address. (Student vehicles & company vehicles are not required to be registered at permit address).

Note:
Renting: If you are renting, a copy of your tenancy agreement or a letter from the Private Residency Tenancy Board confirming that you are a tenant at the address to which the application relates will be required.

Resident: Not Owner or Renting, a copy of a Bank Statement or Income Tax Certificate to prove that you live at the address mentioned will be required.

 

A copy of your Certificate of Motor Insurance in the applicant's name at the address mentioned on the application form.

A €30 fee should be paid to the Council after your application has been approved.

A resident's parking permit is valid for one year, after which, you must renew your parking permit application to continue parking in a pay and display area.

How do I renew my residents parking permit?

Residents parking permits must be renewed annually.

If your vehicle details and address have not changed you can renew your resident's Parking Permits as follows:

Download and complete an application form for a resident's parking permitselecting the option for "Renewal of Permit" .

The Application Form must be completed in full along with the following documents:

I have a resident's parking permit and have changed my vehicle; do I need a new permit?

Yes, a new permit must be issued with the new vehicle registration number.

To update your permit

Complete a Change of Vehicle Declaration Form

Submit a copy of you Certificate of Motor Insurance in your name, detailing the new vehicle registration number and the address to which your permit application relates.

Return the residents parking permit with your old vehicle registration.

Pay a fee of €30 for the new permit.

Visitor's permit

I am a resident of Pay and Display parking area; where can visitors to my residence park?

Each Resident in a Pay and Display Area is entitled to apply for Visitors Permits. A Visitor's Permit allows visitors to a resident, to park on designated pay and display areas near to the residents address.

Entitlement - Number of Visitor Permits:

Once a resident has been approved for visitors permits the resident is entitled to a total of 52 visitors permits per year with an overall limit of 104 permits per housing unit.

 

Cost of Visitor Permits

A Visitors Permit costs €2.50 and they are sold in blocks of 4 at a cost of €10.

 

Conditions of Use - Visitor Permits

The disc must be used in a pay & display-parking place in the street/s (zones) named on the front of the parking disc. It is not valid for use in any other pay & display area.

Visitor must indicate year, month, day, hour and minute (to the nearest 5 minutes) that the visitor wishes to commence their parking by fully scratching off appropriate panels. The panels scratched must be clearly visible.

Display the disc on the front dashboard with the parking time clearly visible from the outside of the vehicle

The maximum parking time is a continuous period of twenty-four hours from the time that parking commences. e.g. if the date scratched off on permit is Dec 3rd, 2013 at 3.30pm the permit is valid up until Dec 4th, 2013 at 3.30pm.

Visitor Parking Discs are non-refundable.

Permits may be used by visitors or persons engaged by the resident to carry out work on his/her residence. It is the responsibility of the resident to ensure that this is the case.

Visitor permits are sold in blocks of 4 at a cost of €10 euro . Payment must be made at the cash office at City Hall, College Rd., Galway.

 

 

Carer's Permit

Who is entitled to apply for a carer's parking permit?

A person who requires care in their residence, and who resides in a pay and display parking area, may apply for a Carers Parking Permit.

The permit may be used by the person who visits, calls on or makes a stay with the resident for the purpose of ongoing daily care for a medical illness.

The Carer's Permit entitles the Carer to park free of charge and without a time limit in the disc parking area indicated on the permit.

Application Process:

The Application Form must be completed in full along with the following documents:

A current utility bill in your name at the address mentioned (E.S.B./Telephone Bill/Bank Statement only issued in the last 3 months).

Confirmation from the resident's doctor that the resident requires ongoing daily care due to a chronic illness.

A €10 euro fee should be paid to the Council after your application has been approved.
