Residents Association Handbook

A guide for communities, from Galway City Council

A Residents Association is a group of people living in the same area who come together to improve their neighbourhood and represent the views of residents.

Residents Associations can represent households who are buying, owning, or renting homes in both local authority and private estates. Galway City Council encourages and supports residents to work together to make their estate or community a better place to live.

A Residents Association can:

  • Identify and address local issues and concerns
  • Help find practical solutions for the area
  • Apply for funding and grants for community projects
  • Organise social and community events
  • Represent local interests and engage with decision‑makers
  • Provide opportunities to meet neighbours and develop new skills

Residents Association Handbook

Galway City Council has developed the Residents Association Handbook to support both new and existing Residents Associations. The handbook provides practical guidance on setting up, managing, and sustaining an association.

Information Sessions

To support the launch of this handbook and initiative, Galway City Council’s Urban and Community Development Officers will be hosting in person information sessions on forming and sustaining Residents Associations.

The information sessions will:
