“On behalf of the people of Galway City, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family of John O’Mahony on his passing this morning, especially to his wife Gerardine, and his daughters, Gráinne, Niamh, Rhona, Deirdre and Cliodhna.
John will always have a special place in the hearts of the people of Galway.
John gave our county so many special days, but most particularly, guiding Galway to the winning of the All Irelands in both 1998 and 2001. The many tributes no doubt that many a former player of his will pay to him in the coming days are so richly deserved. John will be remembered as the one of greatest managers in the game and his successes with Leitrim and Mayo too in the history of time will reflect this along with the countless clubs he helped along the way.
John was also committed to public service both as a T.D. and Senator for Mayo and always went above and beyond for any of his constituents that sought his assistance and even after his retirement as a public representative, he could still be counted upon to help.
Over the coming days, John’s life will be rightly celebrated and his place in the hearts of Galway will go on for years to come.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."
Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Peter Keane
