Galway City Council Celebrates 125 Years of Local Government

Galway City Council has commemorated the passing of the 1898 Local Government Act, at a reception in City Hall on Monday 2 December 2024. 

The 1898 Local Government Act, which came into effect in 1899, established three new forms of local authority: county councils, rural district councils and urban district councils.

The Local Government Archivists and Records Managers in association with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage recently launched a commemorative publication compiled of fascinating photos and archival material that highlights the 125 years of active local government in Ireland.  

The publication was launched in Galway City by Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Peter Keane, and Galway City Council Chief Executive Leonard Cleary, at a reception on Monday 2 December 2024 in City Hall.
