Youth Lates, a Galway City Council Night-Time Economy initiative in partnership with Galway City Council Creative Ireland Programme, Music Generation Galway City, Youth Work Ireland Galway, Galway City Comhairle na nÓg, and Galway Arts Centre | Nuns Island Theatre, is thrilled to announce a brand new project: Youth Lates: Spoken Word!
Join spoken word artists Mars Duignan and Liam McBrearty for a series of six dynamic and engaging workshops designed to take you on a journey from developing your ideas to writing and performing your own powerful pieces. Whether you are already writing all the time or simply curious about what poetry is all about, this is your chance to find your voice and share what matters to you.
What to Expect:
Over six 2-hour sessions, you will:
- Explore what spoken word is and how it connects to comedy, monologues, jokes, poetry, speeches, stand-up, debate, and storytelling.
- Discover inspiring examples of children's and teenage poetry, focusing on techniques like rhyme, colour, humour, and imagery.
- Learn creative idea generation techniques through brainstorming, mind mapping, and collaborative exercises.
- Dive into different forms of poetry, from free verse to more structured styles, and experiment with disarming sincerity.
- Develop your performance skills, focusing on delivery, timing, and annunciation, drawing inspiration from Leaving Certificate texts and performance examples.
- Receive guidance and feedback on editing and revising your work to create impactful pieces.
The Grand Finale:
The workshops will culminate in a special Youth Lates Showcase on the Youth Lates Stage as part of Cruinniú na nÓg 2025 on Saturday, June 7th at Fr Burke Park! This is your chance to share your newly crafted spoken word pieces with a live audience.
