Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge

As part of the Galway Transport Strategy, Galway City Council is proposing the provision of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Corrib adjacent to the existing Salmon Weir Bridge.

Project Progress to Date

Update November 2022: Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge - Cathedral Area Traffic Management

Construction works on the new Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge is progressing well. The Contractor, Jons Civil Engineering Limited are preparing the area for lifting the main span of the bridge into position. This requires temporary traffic management around the Cathedral area. The current traffic management plan includes partial road closure of Goal road and the car park south of the Cathedral. See drawing attached; Phase 2 Temporary Traffic Management Plan

From the 27th of the November to the 22nd of December, we will be entering a new phase of traffic management for the cathedral area. This involves readjustment of road closures in the area and relocating bus stops. See drawing below showing; Phase 3 Temporary Traffic Management Plan

Update January 2020:

A preferred option for the bridge has been identified, with environmental reporting underway. Galway City Council intend to submit the project through the planning process in 2020. Further details will available as part of the planning process.

(June 2020) Galway is built at the mouth of the River Corrib, with four bridges bringing residents over the fastest flowing city river in Europe, into our city centre, and onward to Connemara or the East. Wednesday 10th June marked a significant milestone for a transformative project for sustainable travel in Galway City, as Galway City Councillors voted overwhelmingly in favour of endorsing the new Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge. The proposed new bridge will now proceed to An Bord Pleanála for approval. This is the first new proposed river crossing to be provided in Galway in over 30 years.

Galway City Council is inviting members of the public to learn more about the proposed bridge, through an innovative ‘virtual information session’, as part of non-statutory public information on the project. In response to Covid-19 restrictions, the design team have developed a virtual information room, where the public can read more about the proposed new Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge - including project documentation, live models and virtual fly throughs. The site will go live on Monday the 29th June and can be accessed through https://virtualengage.arup.com/salmon-weir/
